Penetang Bay

Penetang Bay

Incorporated  in 1882, Penetanguishene meaning “land of the white rolling sands”, is a bilingual community located on the southeasterly tip of Georgian Bay.  The Town, rich in naval history, boasts the historical attraction Discovery Harbour, housing various reconstructed buildings, replica sailing ships and a naval yard.  The King's Wharf Theatre located at Discovery Harbour is host to various plays and musicals throughout the summer.  Boat tours are operated from the Town’s Wharf.  Children are often heard laughing at the waterfront splash pad and seen playing in the newly developed playground, which are located in Rotary Champlain Wendat Park along with a plethora of statues and an outdoor amphitheatre. There are two notable churches located in Penetanguishene.  The oldest in the community being St. James on-the-Lines (Anglican), constructed in 1836, and the most prominent being the large Roman Catholic church named St. Anne's standing next to Town Hall.

The Town organizes numerous special events including their annual Winterama which is claimed to be the longest running winter carnival in the province.  2017 will mark the 70th anniversary of this popular event.

The Penetanguishene Trails System has been designed for your recreational, leisure enjoyment.  Enjoy 12  kilometres of trails through historic Penetanguishene!  Along the trail system you will enjoy the waterfront tranquility of the Town’s Rotary Champlain Wendat Park.  You may visit the Historic Port of Penetanguishene, Discovery Harbour, the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum or the Historic Town Centre equipped with various dining options.  The trail system, forming part of the “Trans-Canada Trail”, provides a scenic and vital link between our neighbouring municipalities of Tiny and Midland, as well as marinas.
